Comedian and self-proclaimed design nerd Tim Ross brings Design Nation, his acclaimed talk to Melbourne Design Week. In it he explores the fascinating and often surprising stories of what he calls the “invisible icons” of Australian design. From the Stackhat to the iconic Dolphin Torch, Tim uses his trademark wit to ask us to rediscover these ubiquitous, everyday objects of Australian design through previously untold stories, personal anecdotes and design narratives, revealing how our unique design histories have helped shape our national identity.
Tim’s inventive take on architecture and design has seen him win an AWGIE award for his top rating ABC TV series Streets of Your Town. In 2016 he was invited to speak at the opening of the London Design Museum. In March 2018, Design Nation, the exhibition on which this talk is based, opened at Sydney’s Powerhouse Museum. In May 2018, Tim was awarded the National Trust Heritage Award for Advocacy, in July 2018 he presented the Heritage Council of Victorias annual address and in November he presented the Griffin Lecture for the Australian Institute of Architecture at the Press Club in Canberra.
Hosted at RMIT Storey Hall, the show runs for 1 hour and 15 mins and including a question and answer session.
This event is part of Melbourne Design Week 2019 organised by NGV in collaboration with Creative Victoria.
